Multilingual and Multicultural Considerations in Voice

The United States a multilingual nation with over 350 different languages spoken according to the Census Bureau. SLPs are ethically responsible to meet the needs of any of these speakers, yet standard normative data and evaluation practices in voice are based on monolingual speakers. This presentation will consider the role of language and culture on voice and voice disorders, take a closer look at the Spanish language and Latino/a/e cultures, review modifications to evaluation practices for multilingual speakers, discuss providing bilingual services, and consider ethical concerns related to service provision for multilingual clients and supervision of multilingual graduate students. Presenters include a monolingual English speaker, two native English speakers with conversational proficiency in Spanish, and a native English-Spanish speaker from Puerto Rico.
